There was a total of 885 crew members on the ship. According to historyofthetitanic.org, this included 421 engineers, 309 stewards and stewardesses, 66 cooks, 8 orchestra members, 5 postal clerks, 2 storekeepers, 2 wireless operators, 2 assistants, 7 officers and the captain. Out of all of these members, 215 died, including three of the officers and the captain.
The captain of the ship was Captain Edward John Smith. The Titanic was supposed to be Smith's last voyage because he was retiring after it. The Titanic started it's voyage on April 10, 1912. Around 11:40 p.m. on April 15, a crew member spotted an iceberg in the path of the Titanic. According to the website biography.com, the ship scraped against the iceberg and suffered damage to its forward area and several holes have been made in the ship’s side, allowing water to rush in. Smith then proceeded to the bridge and worked on assessing the situation. He soon learned that the ship was on its way down and ordered that the crew to prepare the lifeboats. Smith, like all true captains, went down with his ship.
